Happy Gnat

By Michael Cain

Happy Creature, what gives you wings?

Your blue jay mimicry never falters

In this striking green forest,

Mirrored in emerald waters,

No yellow-brown valley gnat are you

Flying in the face of flora testimony,

Basking in cool breezes over the Siskiyous,

The irritant in otherwise placid Nirvanas.

What brings you here happiest gnat?

Friend of peaceful swallowtails and

Bohemoths lunching in your river place

The finishing piece: river quietude.

Fly Free your holy Happiness!

Fly beyond your current altitude,

Surpass the human attitude toward you

Give us latitude to address ineptitude.

It appears we want to swat you,

Overtake the river's edge, your edge,

Where a fence erected, separates us,

You from us and us from gentle nature.
